“Typecast will feature new work by Ben Blount, including letterpress work created at a two week residency at Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Blount was an artist-in-residence through the Outbound program at Transit Residency in 2017. The work developed there was a series of letterpress prints exploring the language we use around race. The work references everything from America’s racial history to current euphemisms, slang, and slurs. Hamilton boasts the world’s largest collection of wood type and the prints from the residency utilize type from that collection.
This exhibition will be supported by past and current work that explores Blount’s favorite themes of race, identity, and culture. At times both playful, and challenging, his work is an attempt to recontextualize the implicit and explicit notions of race and identity in America to give them a new form to promote conversation and action. A designer by profession, the work is text based, graphic, and often content-rich. Together, this collection of books and prints are an engaging take on race and American culture. Blount is eager to contribute to the conversation that American is not having.
