We are excited that this week (Oct 19-22) Chicago will be filled with attendees of the Alliance of Artists’ Communities’ 20th annual conference! Attendees begin registering for the conference Wednesday evening, at the Hilton (720 S. Michigan Ave.) and we kick off the conference with a reception at Gensler (11 E. Madison, 3rd floor) that evening.
Thursday’s breakout sessions will be held at Columbia College Chicago’s Film Row Center, 1104 S. Wabash Ave, 8th floor — the same building holds the Center for Book & Paper Arts on the 2nd floor (and there’s a great exhibition going on there, til December!) — as will much of the rest of the conference, on Friday and Saturday.
Thursday evening, the Alliance’s auction fundraiser and award party will be at the SAIC Ballroom (112 S. Michigan Avenue), and WXRT air personality/Radio Hall of Famer/Columbia College Chicago instructor-extraordinaire TERRI HEMMERT will be awarding the Mary T. Wolfe Catalyst Award to Lois Weisberg, former Commissioner of Arts and a life-long advocate for the arts and artists in Chicago.
Friday and Saturday afternoons, conference attendees will break into groups for the chance to visit a wide variety of locations — Fridays selections include visiting Anchor Graphics, an architectural walking tour, a North Branch bookbinding workshop, the Hand-in-Glove (a concurrent conference in Chicago, coordinated by threewalls and the Alliance of Independent Arts Organizers) forum on “unconventional residency programs,” or a tour of Hyde Park arts; Saturday tour options include a city-wide art spaces walking tour, Pilsen arts tour, a printmaking workshop at Center for Book & Paper Arts, a visit to Ragdale in Lake Forest, or Transit’s tour of the arts in Logan Square! (Pretty hard to choose, isn’t it?)
Friday evening, attendees celebrate the recipients of the Alliance’s 2010 Midwestern Voices + Visions award, granted to seven artists of color from the Midwest (the Alliance offers this award every three years, with funding from The Joyce Foundation). The Midwestern Voices + Visions exhibition is taking place at the Chicago Artist Coalition’s new gallery space, 217 North Carpenter.
Saturday evening, the Closing Night Party will be at Columbia College Chicago’s Media + Production Center, 1600 S. State Street.
