Transit Residency NFP (TRANSIT) is a 501(c)3 not for profit residency founded in 2010, which aims to serve artists from multiple disciplines within written, visual, music and performance arts, who seek opportunities to create in an urban environment and/or specifically culturally rich Chicago. TRANSIT is intentionally transient. We accordion our programs’ scale based on artists’ needs and our budgeted, available funds. TRANSIT plugs artists into a range of existing arts communities throughout Chicago [our Inbound programs], allowing visiting artists to engage with the larger community. Midwest artists have opportunities to experience working elsewhere temporarily, and then showcase their work in our gallery-partner space(s) in Chicago upon returning [our Outbound programs].
TRANSIT is a residency program that will provide the time, space, and needs of artists* by partnering with existing facilities, rather than by being a retreat or facility in itself, and by showcasing the work they create during their residencies.
TRANSIT aims to enrich Chicago’s cultural climate by offering artists from outside Chicagoland the opportunity to make work here and become part of Chicago’s vibrant arts community(-ies). Additionally, Transit gives Midwest artists the chance to make work elsewhere – encouraging a role as cultural ambassadors – and showcase their work and experiences in Chicago.
*By “artists” we mean those who work in the visual arts, writers, sound-artists / musicians, performance arts / dance; as many creative disciplines as possible, contingent upon the limits of our resources.
Revisions to Applicant Eligibility
As of Fall 2016, Transit’s Inbound Programs are now open to artists from outside Chicagoland (Chicagoland being defined as all of Cook County for these purposes). Transit’s Outbound Programs are open to artists from the Midwest (Midwest being defined as Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin, for these purposes).

We recently learned that the IRS has lost us….temporarily. They have no record of Transit Residency NFP being a tax exempt organization. BUT WE ARE! So, we have created a page from which you can download our IRS Determination Letter (dated March 2, 2015), as well as our past 990s if you need additional confirmation.
